Environmental Hf–Nd isotopic decoupling in World river clays ArchiMer
Bayon, Germain; Skonieczny, Charlotte; Delvigne, Camille; Toucanne, Samuel; Bermell, Sylvain; Ponzevera, Emmanuel; Andre, Luc.
The hafnium and neodymium radiogenic isotope systems behave differently during Earth surface processes, causing a wide dispersion of Hf and Nd isotopic compositions in sediments and other sedimentary rocks. The decoupling between Hf and Nd isotopes in sediments is generally attributed to a combination of preferential sorting of zircon during sediment transport and incongruent weathering processes on continents. In this study, we analysed size-fractions of sediment samples collected near the mouth of 53 rivers worldwide to better understand the factors controlling the distribution of Hf and Nd isotopes in sediments. Our results for rivers draining old cratonic areas and volcanic provinces demonstrate that both granite and basalt weathering can lead to...

Extensive wet episodes in Late Glacial Australia resulting from high-latitude forcings ArchiMer
Bayon, Germain; De Deckker, Patrick; Magee, John W.; Germain, Yoan; Bermell, Sylvain; Tachikawa, Kazuyo; Norman, Marc D..
Millennial-scale cooling events termed Heinrich Stadials punctuated Northern Hemisphere climate during the last glacial period. Latitudinal shifts of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) are thought to have rapidly propagated these abrupt climatic signals southward, influencing the evolution of Southern Hemisphere climates and contributing to major reorganisation of the global ocean-atmosphere system. Here, we use neodymium isotopes from a marine sediment core to reconstruct the hydroclimatic evolution of subtropical Australia between 90 to 20 thousand years ago. We find a strong correlation between our sediment provenance proxy data and records for western Pacific tropical precipitations and Australian palaeolakes, which indicates that Northern...

Identification des pecheries cotieres bretonnes et des problemes d'amenagement ArchiMer
Talidec, Catherine; Berthou, Patrick; Rivoalen, Jean-jacques; Bermell, Sylvain; Guillaumont, Brigitte.
The study undertaken during the 1994-1998 planning contract on the Breton fishing fleet made it possible to underscore the size of the economic activity in regional territorial waters: More than 85% of the ships work there. This space, which is a matter of national sovereignty, is mainly managed at the regional level. To clarify the paths that may need to be taken, it seemed opportune to us to identify spatially the coastal fisheries, as well as the main current problems of planning. The fishing zones were mapped. This work required special surveys of the local fishing committees, because it could not be done from existing fishing statistics. The surveys allowed us to approach the localization of the various trades' fishing zones on maps at 1/50,000, as...

Intensifying Weathering and Land Use in Iron Age Central Africa ArchiMer
Bayon, Germain; Dennielou, Bernard; Etoubleau, Joel; Ponzevera, Emmanuel; Toucanne, Samuel; Bermell, Sylvain.
About 3000 years ago, a major vegetation change occurred in Central Africa, when rainforest trees were abruptly replaced by savannas. The consensus is that the forest disturbance was caused by climate change. We show here that chemical weathering in Central Africa, reconstructed from geochemical analyses of a marine sediment core, intensified abruptly at the same period, departing significantly from the long-term weathering fluctuations related to the Late Quaternary climate. Evidence that this weathering event was also contemporaneous with the migration of Bantu-speaking farmers across Central Africa suggests that human land-use intensification at that time already had a significant impact on the rainforest.

Major modification of sediment routing by a large Mass Transport Deposit in the Gulf of Lions (Western Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Dennielou, Bernard; Jegou, I.; Droz, Laurence; Jouet, Gwenael; Cattaneo, Antonio; Berné, Serge; Aslanian, Daniel; Loubrieu, Benoit; Rabineau, Marina; Bermell, Sylvain.
In the Gulf of Lions (Western Mediterranean), the emplacement of a large (160 km3) Mass Transport Deposit, the Rhone Western Mass Transport Deposit (RWMTD), at the base of slope, aside the Rhone deep-sea fan between 1800 and 2700 m water depth, resulted in a major modification of the sediment routing by clogging a drainage network and blocking at the base of slope sediments that were previously routed into the Valencia channel and the Balearic abyssal plain. The RWMTD was sourced from sediments of the western flank of the Rhone upper fan and the adjacent base of slope. The mass transport deposit is characterized by a transparent seismic facies and sediment cores show that it is composed of a stiff laminated muddy lithofacies characteristic of the Rhone fan...

The Demerara plateau, located offshore French Guiana and Suriname, is part of a passive transform continental margin particularly prone to develop slope instabilities, probably in relation to the presence of a free distal border along its steep continental slope. Slope failure occurred at different periods (Cretaceous to Neogene) and shows an overall retrogressive evolution through time. Upslope these failure headscarp, an enigmatic regional MioPliocene unconformity has been discovered through the interpretation of new academic and industrial datasets. The aim of this work is to describe and understand the origin of this surface. Our analysis shows that this unconformity is made of a series of valleys that cross-cut sedimentary strata. Each one of these...

Rare earth elements and neodymium isotopes in sedimentary organic matter ArchiMer
Freslon, Nicolas; Bayon, Germain; Toucanne, Samuel; Bermell, Sylvain; Bollinger, Claire; Chéron, Sandrine; Etoubleau, Joel; Germain, Yoan; Khripounoff, Alexis; Ponzevera, Emmanuel; Rouget, Marie Laure.
We report rare earth element (REE) and neodymium (Nd) isotope data for the organic fraction of sediments collected from various depositional environments, i.e. rivers (n=25), estuaries (n=18), open-ocean settings (n=15), and cold seeps (n=12). Sedimentary Organic Matter (SOM) was extracted using a mixed hydrogen peroxide/nitric acid solution (20%-H2O2 – 0.02M-HNO3), after removal of carbonate and oxy-hydroxide phases with dilute hydrochloric acid (0.25M-HCl). A series of experimental tests indicate that extraction of sedimentary organic compounds using H202 may be complicated occasionally by partial dissolution of sulphide minerals and residual carbonates. However, this contamination is expected to be minor for REE because measured concentrations in H2O2...

Rare earth elements and neodymium isotopes in world river sediments revisited ArchiMer

Over the past decades, rare earth elements (REE) and their radioactive isotopes have received tremendous attention in sedimentary geochemistry, as tracers for the geological history of the continental crust and provenance studies. In this study, we report on elemental concentrations and neodymium (Nd) isotopic compositions for a large number of sediments collected near the mouth of rivers worldwide, including some of the world’s major rivers. Sediments were leached for removal of non-detrital components, and both clay and silt fractions were retained for separate geochemical analyses. Our aim was to re-examine, at the scale of a large systematic survey, whether or not REE and Nd isotopes could be fractionated during Earth surface processes. Our results...

he IGUANES cruise took place in May 2013 on the R/V L'Atalante along the Demerara passive transform margin off French Guiana and Surinam. Seismic, multibeam and chirp acquisitions were made. Piston cores were collected for pore geochemistry and sedimentology. A mooring was deployed on the sea-bottom for 10 months (temperature, salinity, turbidity and current measurements). This new dataset highlights the lateral variability of the 350 km-long Guiana–Surinam transform margin due to the presence of a releasing bend between two transform segments. The adjacent Demerara Plateau is affected by a 350 km-long giant slide complex. This complex initiated in Cretaceous times and was regularly reactivated until recent times. Since the Miocene, contourite processes...
